Chinese New Year is upcoming

Chinese New Year, the greatest festival of Chinese people, is called 'Lunar New year' or 'Spring Festival' (春节). New year eve is on this Saturday, Feb. 9th.

Now most people are getting busier in order do good preparation for it.
During this festival, Chinese families have a lot of customs, such as:

1. Playing firecrackers and fireworks for celebration.

2. Family members have a big dinner together at new year eve. This dinner is called "年夜饭", also represents entire family's re-unity.

3. Elders give children lucky money sealed in red envelops, which's called "红包".

 4. People would like to give good wishes to each other. The commonly used greetings are "春节快乐", "过年好", "恭喜发财", "万事如意"...

Interesting Reduplication.

In Chinese language, there are often reduplication of words, that is to emphasize the mood.

1. Examples for Verbs: 看看想想思考思考观察观察休息休息

2. Examples for Adjective: 漂漂亮亮、高高兴兴、干干净净、雪白雪白

3. Examples for Measure Words: 一个个、一件件、一箱箱、一台台、一幅幅

...

More  Chinese language you've learned, more interesting reduplication words you might meet. ^_^

How to ask questions in Chinese. 吗, 吧

1. Use "吗"
If it is a simple statement, usually put "吗" at the end of the sentence, it would become a question directly.

e.g.
他明天来                       ->  他明天来
He will come tomorrow   ->  Will he come tomorrow?

她喜欢看电影                       ->  她喜欢看电影
She likes watching movies.       Does she like watching movies?

2. Use "吧"
You can use "吧" instead of "吗" in the questions similar to those above. But it indicates that you expect it is right.

他明天来吧?   她喜欢看电影

3. Not to use "吗"
a.When you ask about what/when/how/where/how many/how much etc., don't use 吗. For instance:
他什么时候来?  她喜欢什么?

b. When it is an optional question, don't use 吗. For instance:
他明天来不来?  他明天来还是后天来?  她喜不喜欢看电影?
